Shampoo Bar Myths: Do You Need a Transition or Vinegar Rinse?
Quick answer: No, One Earth shampoo bars require no transition period and no vinegar rinse! Find out why below.
Perhaps you've heard that there's a "transition period" for the hair when you switch from liquid shampoo to shampoo bars. Or that you need an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse after you use a solid shampoo. These are myths that originate from the world of hair soap bars, which true shampoo bars, including One Earth bars, are not.
Why Do People Think Shampoo Bars Need a Transition Period or Vinegar Rinse?
If you've used a hair soap bar before (as opposed to a low-pH shampoo bar), you may have noticed that after a week or so your hair feels gummy and brittle. The high PH, combined with oils in the soap and elements in the water, leaves a soap scum on your hair and scalp.

Folks who sell hair soap bars (which they often call shampoo bars, unfortunately) promote the idea that the brittle, waxy feeling is part of a transition period that will pass. The science does not back up the idea of a passing transition: it shows that high-pH (alkaline, soap) products do lasting damage to hair. The ACV rinse is intended to lower the pH and help remove the gummy buildup. Vinegar may help rinse some of the buildup away, but it doesn't undo the damage caused by repeated use of a high-pH product on the hair and scalp.
How One Earth Shampoo Bars Protect Hair Structure and Color Treatments
As we describe in The Science Behind our Shampoo Bars, hair products need to be made at a low pH (~pH 5 to pH 6), to protect the hair cuticle, integrity and color treatments. The chemistry, ingredients and processes for making healthy shampoo bars are very different from those for making soap. If you hear the words "cold-process", "transition period" or "vinegar rinse", those are clues that the product is soap, not shampoo.

All One Earth shampoo bars are completely SOAP-FREE and made at a pH between 5 and 5.7. There is no transition period, and you don’t need a vinegar rinse.
As well as being soap-free, One Earth shampoo bars are free from palm oil-based surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate, and free from parabens, silicones, and artificial fragrances. We make 6 distinct formulas, plus a beard wash bar, for different hair and scalp needs.
When you switch to a One Earth shampoo bar, there's no awkward transition or compromise on your hair experience. We stand by our products and the science behind them: if our bars don't leave your hair looking and feeling as good as (or better than!) ever, we will replace or refund your order.
