TIPS FOR HAIR WASHING

Just like there's science behind hair-product formulation, there's science behind everyday hair care too. In this post, we provide tips for hair washing to help keep your hair healthy.

HOW OFTEN TO WASH YOUR HAIR?

Like many things in life, how often to wash your hair varies from person to person and day to day. A basic rule of thumb is: when your hair feels greasy, wash it. For some of us, this is every day. For others, it's once a week or less often. Sebaceous glands in our hair follicles produce an oily, waxy substance called sebum. Sebum helps to protect the hair and scalp from dryness and damage, but excess sebum can lead to dandruff, acne and itchy scalp.

Resist the urge to wash your hair unless it's reached your grease-tolerance threshhold. You don't need to wash it just because you're taking a shower; put it up or pop on a shower cap if it's not time for a wash. Excess washing can lead to dry hair, an irritated scalp, frizz and split ends.

BEST HAIR WASHING TEMPERATURE

A steaming hot shower might feel amazing sometimes, but is it good for the hair (and skin)? The science says no, it's not. While warm water helps loosen oils and debris, very hot water can damage the proteins and lipids that are part of the hair structure, and it dries out the scalp. It's best to wash the hair with warm but not very hot water. A temperature that's comfortable on the inside of the wrist is a good temperature for the hair. Even if your scalp is oily, you can cause damage by blasting it with a blow-torch of scalding water.

BEST HAIR WASHING TECHNIQUE

For the best wash for healthy hair and scalp, follow this process:

  1. Thoroughly wet your hair and scalp with warm, not hot water.
  2. Pass shampoo bar over your scalp to apply shampoo to the roots. Avoid using shampoo on the ends of the hair.
  3. Gently lather and massage scalp with finger pads. Avoid scraping the hair and scalp with fingernails.
  4. Continue massaging lather into the scalp for a couple of minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly, taking care not to rub the hair aggressively.
  6. Repeat if needed (if hair was very greasy or scalp still feels oily).
  7. Apply conditioner bar to strands and ends of the hair, avoiding the roots. Comb conditioner through hair with fingers.
  8. Rinse conditioner with lukewarm to cool water.
  9. Gently squeeze water out of hair and gently towel dry.
