Beyond Oatmeal DIY Breakfast Mix
Do you like a breakfast that's energizing, delicious, healthy, fast and economical? If so, try making your own breakfast mix. You'll save a lot of money compared to the brand-name blends available at grocery stores, and you can create your own favorite mix. Below, we share a basic recipe with proportions that work well for a breakfast porridge. Use this as a starting point for your own creative breakfast blends! I make up a big batch and store it in glass mason jars, but you can also store it in plastic bags or other containers.
Beyond Oatmeal Basic Recipe:
- 2 cups instant oatmeal flakes, rolled oats or other grain (such as buckwheat, amaranth or rice)
- 1/2 cup flaxseed meal
- 1/4 cup chia seeds
- 1 Tbsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp salt
Mix all ingredients together and store in an air-tight container. You can use the proportions above to make a larger recipe if you want to have enough to last a while.
Beyond Oatmeal Add-ins:
- Dried fruit (raisins, apples, apricots, other)
- Coconut flakes
- Applesauce
- Berries
- Walnuts or other nuts
- Maple syrup or honey
How to Prepare Beyond Oatmeal:
- Use 1 cup water for every 1/2 cup of beyond oatmeal mix. If using instant oatmeal, just boil the water and mix it in to the oatmeal, then cover and let sit for ~5 minutes. Add any add-ins that you like.
- If using rolled oats or other grains, cook on low heat on the stovetop for 10 to 20 minutes, until done. Add any add-ins that you like.
This is a convenient breakfast to take on the road and camping as well as to eat at home.
